After days of rendering it appears that some of it was in vain and some of it is good. Should have it all finished in a few hours. Might not be the best renders but it is what it is.On a side note it has taken over an hour to upload all my images to the web site so quite glad the majority of that is done as I would imagine when everyone is trying to do that at about 9pm tonight it'llbe going very slow

Currently trying to render in Light Studio. Have been test rendering after applying each material. Has got to a point now after 4 materials applied that it no longer wants to render. Has an error for the next material that is applied. Think i'll give it a miss for the rest of the evening and ask tutors about this tomorrow.Labels: GRAM, light studio

After further work using 3ds max 2009, my mental ray renders are complete. Got a great selection to choose from for my final submission. Now onto light studio. Hopefully this will work fine as my initial work on it is going well. Just gotta make sure the render time isn't too long.Labels: 3ds Max, GRAM, light studio

Website finished now. Working at home so should be all in the clear with that. Got a couple final mental ray renders done today also. Looking at doing an image which shows the position of the daylight in the building over the course of the year.

And my web site is done. I think its looking quite good. Conveys what I want it to. Now back to 3DS Max. Still in the process of applying all the materials. Steady going but having a few selection problems that seem to take a while to resolve with some accurate mouse clicking.Monday, May 25, 2009

Today was spent touching up a few areas of my web page. Then I applied further materials in max and checked out a few basic renders. Getting some decent images and using the UVW mapping of images has given my floor a great look. More of this to happen over the next few days to get my final renders happening.Sunday, May 24, 2009

Almost finished the website today. Only a couple more sections to confirm with the tutors on tuesday then that should be all out of the way. Had a couple problems with frames but got them sorted. Also found out that quite a few of my blog posts are missing however I have blogged them elsewhere also so that will hopefully be alright. Also does anyone know how to get rid of the blue box around an image which is linked to a larger version of that image. I can't remember how to do it and all my thumbnails have the annoying blue box around themSaturday, May 16, 2009
update

been doing renders and getting some sweet images coming out, although need to add some lighting as the interior renders are not going as well as the exterior views.

going to start adding materials next to see how that all goes.
having trouble with the internet connection at uni, can't get on to do some work on my website so will try again tomorrow

Having had the building reviewed today, more work was undertaken to the whole scene. Using both google earth and a bunch web sites, I have been able to create the surrounding landscape/area at a scale as accurate as I could get it short of going there and measuring the buildings. I also tested to see if it would import into max and it does. Time to start rendering

After finishing the handin requirements, tonight was spent joining the models as we haven't tried this yet. Firstly I xref'd the models which worked fine. However to edit any of the layers in the imported file I had to change them in the original file. I then tried a simple copy and paste. This worked perfectly and everything is exactly in the right place and the layers are all accessible from the file. Now all that remains is the exterior topography needs to be fixed as the ground plane shown is just for effect at this stage. Along with a couple of extra little modeling parts then the building will be ready for rendering.
update
have finished my section of the modelling, Matt is going to attempt to combine the files together tonight, hopefully this works!

Update
have been working away on my half of the model, just putting the louvres into the lobby area, then will get some CAD renders done.
had a few issues with stairs but have had to alter the design rules for autocad in order to get the right depth and width, as the entrance stairs are too shallow for the allocations

After a few painstaking hours, I have managed to get the stair tool working how I wanted it to. This proved not to be as simple as just putting in a mid landing. To do this in AutoCAD you need to place your stair with less stair treads than required, place the landing then place the remaining stairs.
I have also added a ledge which runs up the stairs for the balustrade to sit on.

Today was spent modelling the lantern parts of the building and the roof. I had to re-model a few walls but now everything is in place and is looking good. Kayla has been working on her section and our building appears to be coming together quite nicely.
The lanterns were modelled using the curtain wall tool. Only the pouter layer of glass has been done so far as there are th 3 layers of glass so there will be 3 curtain walls in that section. I'm looking forward to seeing the images produced with these in place.

Through the voyeuristic capabilities of google map's street view I have been able to figure out the one wall of which we do not have any images of. This will allow me to complete the exterior of my portion of the building true to the buildings form.
On a side note, does anyone know how to create a glass balustrade in AutoCAD? I can't seem to get it with solid glass and one railing on the top. Cheers

I have been setting out a few construction lines for us to work from along with aligning the floor plans which we have to work off. I have also attempted to do a basic model of one of the lanterns where the building gets its light. The modelling part went fine but the 3ds part didn't quite go as I would have hoped.Labels: construction lines, GRAM, lantern, modelling

Documentation - GRAM

Shown here are some of the floor plans and sections which were provided to us from wHY Architecture. From these we have been able to gain measurements which will allow an accurate model to be developed.
The colored plan shows th areas which will be modelled by Kayla and myself. The small section is one floor higher than the larger section so they even the workload out.Labels: Floor Plan, GRAM, section, wHY Architecture

In regards to modelling our building. There are areas below ground which don't recieve much natural light at all. These areas are used for parking and storage. Is it essential to model these areas or can we model it from the ground up?Labels: below ground, GRAM, modelling, natural light

Having only emailed WhyArchitecture about the Grand Rapids Art Museum last night. I have received information and access to an ftp site allowing me to download the drawings which will make modelling the building a lot easier.Labels: ftp, GRAM, pending, WhyArchitecture
