Maybe Lightstudio doesn't hate me...
I got about halfway through Jakes tutorial on exporting to Radiance, but gave up after a file wasn't created properly. When I went back to 3ds Max I was able to render Lightstudio at highest quality and at a resolution of 1280 x 960. I've got no idea why, but I'm not complaining. They take quite a while but look way, way, better.
update: I got out one picture and while rendering the second 3ds max crashed. Now it's back to limiting me.

Currently trying to render in Light Studio. Have been test rendering after applying each material. Has got to a point now after 4 materials applied that it no longer wants to render. Has an error for the next material that is applied. Think i'll give it a miss for the rest of the evening and ask tutors about this tomorrow.

Have been working on the light studio renders. . .
Have managed to seperate the model into layers and apply basic materials.
I am haveing some trouble with applying maps to the materials as when I do the rendered element with the maps come out black. . . but have put some textures on and that is working okish!
Still can not get renders looking like mental ray renders!!

After further work using 3ds max 2009, my mental ray renders are complete. Got a great selection to choose from for my final submission. Now onto light studio. Hopefully this will work fine as my initial work on it is going well. Just gotta make sure the render time isn't too long.

Had problems importing our revit linked file into 3dsMax 9. It would export as separte linked files... so those that went to last weeks lecture would know... we had to import the files separately, or use file link manager in 3ds. We have gone with the first choice and everything seems to be working fine!
We also experimented with the bitmap image to make notches in our arches as they are composed of separate blocks of stone... did this is tute with Mike's help and hopefully we will be able to do it ourselves, will be attempting tommorow.
Website is finally up but having trouble with linking revit files, when uploaded to internet revit file downloads as a word document> finding very strange, have met two others with the same problem but can't seem to figure out why.

Mental ray and light studio renders

Having been to today's lecture on problem solving when converting models, and rendering with light studio, I've tried a few of their suggestions and had (so far) some good results. It still looks like the mass is one item, but we can use selection by face/polygon and then assign the material.
I will continue to setup my camera views and keep rendering.

Patience paid off.. lightstudio imported finally
After several days of attempting to get lightstudio working we have finally managed to import the file into lightstudio and at the same time preserving the geometry names that we needed for material mapping.
Simon and I are now working through materials and lighting; creating maps and bumps.Labels: DELTA, DELTA_lightstudio, kunstmuseum stuttgart, light studio
more lightstudio problems
We have managed to finally get the lightstudio renderer working with one material applied to all. However as we went on to apply different materials the method of workflow to 3ds max had managed to destroy the names of the geometry. As a result geometry was generalised for example System 1 to System 6754; it became impossible to seperate geometry to create accurate materiality. We are now working through options to keep the geometry names un touched but still compatible with light studio.Labels: DELTA, DELTA_problems, kunstmuseum stuttgart, light studio

I have problem with the light studio rendering, as you can see, the glass on the left image looks very strange. The model has been made in archicad, then was exported to .3ds file before it was imported to 3ds max. I've tried a lot of materials for the glass as well as changing the settings but it didn't work. I looked at the models we made in the tutorial, and did some interior renders, the model which were made in autocad and revit worked well in light studio, but the model made in archicad got the same problem. Then I thought maybe I should try to export the archicad model to .dwg file and import it to 3ds max, which is the way I did with revit model, and it works!!!, problem solved.

Well today showed a bit more promise. I now have 2 fully functional max files. Had a few problems with the light studio model due to an excessive amount of polygons being imported from AutoCAD. However now I am getting renders through both light studio and mental ray. Materials are being applied at the moment and after a few questions to the tutors my previous website will be getting updated over the next few days in time for the hand in.

Rendering Suntory: light studio progress
Finally I managed to get my model to render in light studio..Before this, I just used my mental ray 3dsmax file and saved it again as a light studio file after changing the renderer from mental ray to light studio. It wasn't that easy after all because for the mental ray file, I linked the file into max instead of importing it. Apparently, light studio can't read all the extra symbols(,;<>) that define the layer..So I tried importing it as a legacy dwg. file with color instead of layer..the layer names got simpler (no more symbols) but I still can't render..It's taking ages just for the renderer to write the building geometry..And I was surprised to find that my stairs went missing again..It seems that everytime I import the file into max as a legacy dwg. or just autocad dwg. the stairs would go missing.
So I tried saving it as a 3ds file in deep exploration and then I imported the model into max as a 3ds. Finally every element of the model was in there. So after assigning materials to the model and putting the sun in there, I tested the renderer and everything seemed to work out fine..And to reduce the rendering time, I tried freezing the geometry like what Mike suggested..I think it did help although I still felt it took quite some time to render this model since it is a huge one..However, I'm quite glad that I'm finally able to produce renders in light studio even though they are not as pretty as I had hoped they would turn out..here's one of the initial renders I got..
