Getting started
Creating a model is an immensely rewarding experience. However there are a few steps before that end reward is created. For me firstly it was “how do you model a building?” not a perfect start but at least it’s something.
Before I even choose a building I completed three tutorials on three different Modelling programs, Revit, AutoCad and Arcicad. Not with the intension of modelling in each but so when I did come to the modelling of my chosen building I could make an informed decision on what tools would suit best.
It was a long way into the year before me and my teammate Jason felt ready to select a building to model. According to the brief the Building had to be either a Museum or a Church, it had to have natural light featuring, it can’t have been modelled by students in the previous years and there need to be enough information to be able to model it.
After a few initial failed choices, which highlighted the mad grab of the class all rushing to find approval at once . We found at last the Centre for Human Rights in Atlanta an on the charts design by Freelon and HoK which had just been selected as winners of a design competition.
W e signed up this building as ours an immediately found a problem, the only information we had were a few small perspectives and a very small plan off the Freelon web site. Without a side view the angles of the roof would be difficult to imitate we had some back up paths and we could also make things up (informed decisions). I emailed Freelon, after I got the right email address i got in contact with Anna Marich the lead graphic designer and she was very helpful. blog Sunday May 3rd
With new sections our model started to take form. Blog May 3rd
The first few weeks were all about generating the form, Walls Floors and Roof. These were all things I had covered when modelling the Villa Savoye in the Revit Tutorial.
The interim hand in came and the feedback I got was Detail Detail Detail! I was a little worried at the time because Jason had an accident on his on his commute and was struggling to keep up being unable to walk and get to classes. I prepared for the worst. We had made our plan so we both did one half of the building and each part was a building on its own merits. I emailed Mike Donn our class coordinator with my worries. Looking at my model I felt that ten interesting views could be produced with a little preparation.
Our troubles quickly smoothed over however as Jason produced a mammoth effort and we joined our two models together.
Details!! in the meantime I took the advice of the tutors and constructed some landscaping in the courtyard and built the water feature. The possibilities of renders with water made me giddy. I also found modelling possibilities as revit opened up a little to me I created some feature walls with the masing tool and fixed up some lacking areas.
i started importing my half of the model early on into 3dsmax and tried some render shots May11th-May21st
